A bare brown sculpture of vines
gnarled & twisted like a deformed limb
stares back at the balcony seat
where you might imagine the
most patient drinker you’ve ever seen.
You’ve been misled — I am no connoisseur
just a recovered malcontent
observing a less sober world
than one I sloshed about in
before the damn thing
even had time to ferment.
How often wine is a replacement
for spirit in the Biblical cannon
in the Sufis’ drunken words.
I would surely lose myself again.
Stay attached to the vine as Christ said
drink from another cup & know
the infusion of love we all look for
know it or not. Soon I shall watch
this vine erupt —
turn giddy with spirit’s sweetness
but sober & unsung.
