What I Wish I Knew about Mental Health in My Twenties
A love letter to my younger self
Hello Lovely,
I can’t tell you everything about mental health, but I can tell you all you need to know. I now understand you through and through.
Such a high degree of self-awareness is impossible at your age when deep wounds govern your daily experience. Don’t feel bad. Wisdom often, though not always, comes with age.
Let’s start with encouragement because you’ll face many tests and trials that will deplete you to your core. But you will always stand up again.
You possess remarkable strength and perseverance. Those qualities may be difficult for you to see and own as a young adult because they’re mixed with vulnerability, self-doubt, and highly-tuned sensitivity. You more often feel like an emotional wreck than the brave person you are, but in time, you’ll come to appreciate your strength.
You’ll survive each trauma, rising from the depths again and again. Trauma will leave marks on your soul and alter your brain function, but you’ll remain uniquely you, a light in this sometimes dark world.
Above all else, know you’re worthy, lovable, and unforgettable.
