Is the Moon Pointing at the Finger or is the Finger Pointing at the Moon?
Getting rid of the belief you are the doer is key to progress
To say I am in the world is to misunderstand —
I came to throw you a rope
& help you climb, to tell you how I
made the leap, or rather, how it was done —
for in the end the doer had to leave.
At first, I tried to grasp the world
but it fell through my fingers —
then I tried my net of abstractions
& concepts — still I failed simply
turning Sun to Moon, Earth to Water.
Like you, I did what the world suggested
but when I was filled up with objects
& ideas, strangely, only felt more empty.
How could this be? I wondered for years.
One day, after all my strivings
something cleared & a meadow appeared
fragrant & inviting & filled with light.
I saw the ‘I’ I had assumed had divided
the world & thrown everything behind
until a shadow formed blinding my eye.
To be filled with the other light we call God
or Self that pesky ‘I’ had to begin its dissolution —
until another world arrived to take
the space ‘I’ vacated after all its desperate seeking.
Now I’m just a moon pointing at a finger.
