A bar scene

One of the town’s largest annual events had just ended and there were many people still out and about. It had been years since I had played a game of pool, but it looked enticing that night.

We were upstairs at the local bar; me, my friend, Kate, and some of her visiting family.

I challenged Kate to a game of pool, and she agreed. We fished for quarters, chalked up our sticks, and started racking the pool balls.

It has been a long time since we’d been out at the bar together and I was looking forward to laughing our way through missed opportunities and silly mistakes, like an 8-ball slop shot.

Growing up with a pool table at my grandparents' house, I used to be quite good. It was what us kids did to pass time during family gatherings and lazy afternoons.

Now, my dad has that pool table in his living room, and seeing it always brings back several fond memories from my childhood.

What I wasn’t prepared for when watching Kate precisely position herself to target her next striped pool ball was locking eyes with a stranger.
