SPIRITUALITY
How I Approach God
My prayer to the many facets of the Divine
My lord
my God
my friend
my all
my very Self
Years ago, early on my spiritual journey, I developed a love relationship with Francis of Assisi. To be an embodiment of love as he was, where no creature would ever fear him and come to him readily to hear him speak words of love, who followed the ways of Christ in a pure and simple way, inspired me. (In fact, I met an Australian woman who called herself Francis, who embodied that loving simplicity, who traveled the world in poverty, claiming to channel Francis.) While I did not have any formal religious upbringing, my father being an ex-Roman Catholic and my mother a non-practicing Protestant (with a Jewish father I later discovered), we had this beautiful statue of Francis in our garden that I was quite fond of.
Francis would pray, “My God and my all,” through tears of devotion. Somewhere afterward, those words changed for me to include the above verse. Today, I was pondering these words in meditation, and I thought I had only added the last line. No, I had added much more over time. Still, it is the spirit of Francis that I attribute this call to God.
