How I Practice Mindfulness

Spoiler: It’s not by doing breathing exercises or meditating

In a recent post — Mindfulness While Coloring Sunflowers — I mentioned how I am not one for mindfulness, how I have tried it, but it made me feel silly doing breathing exercises or meditating.

But then, as I wrote that post, I concluded I do practice mindfulness, but not by doing what I always thought mindfulness was about.

When I started bullet journaling at the end of 2021, I didn’t know it would become such an important part of my life. I have always loved using a paper calendar, but never found something that really fitted my needs.

Making my calendar, and drawing it as the year carries on, was the perfect solution, because I can also add pages in between. Lists of books I have read, or themes I might want to consider, or pieces I want to write. But also jotting down memories from my past, which will hopefully benefit my kids later when they want to know more about my earlier years — something I wish I had of my mom.

My daughter and I started a routine where I would sit with her every Wednesday and we would draw together, sometimes in total silence, and other times having deep conversations.
