I’ve never been a model communicator. On the one hand, I spoke too impulsively or too directly. Conversely, I suppressed my needs and wants to accommodate and please others.

We humans can be contradictory, right?

But later in life, I learned to speak simply and sincerely, finally bringing ease and sanity into my interactions and relationships.

Simple sincerity means cutting through the outermost layers of anger, shame, or fear and tuning into what’s true for you — then considering how to express your truth honestly and respectfully.

This honest but thoughtful mode of communication has worked exceptionally well for me during conflicts. It increases the chance that everyone will feel respected and more willing to find a mutually agreeable solution.
