The New Year began in silence.

After the temple near my home in Chiba, Japan struck the 108th bell for purification at midnight, silence echoed through the inky sky, vibrating my heart. Silence also marked the New Year in Bali, which was my home for ten years. On the day of Nyepi (Balinese New Year), the island turned off all sounds and lights. People stayed home and refrained from all work, including cooking.

In both cultures, a new year rolls out quietly so they can listen to their inner voice. It leads to contemplation. Writing a New Year’s vision in calligraphy is Japan’s beloved tradition, and so is sharing hofu (New Year’s resolution) with family members, friends, and co-workers.

What does my heart long for?

I ask this question again and again. One answer reveals another one that lies in the deeper dimension. Acknowledging it is an act of self-love and compassion. My vision for the new year emerges from this heart-centered work. I then set goals that express and support it.

The new year brings a new vision. Let’s dance with life, exploring, clarifying, expressing, and nurturing our vision.

A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more. –Rosabeth Moss Kanter
