Christmas has always had a special place in my heart. Even though it’s not traditionally celebrated in our culture.
Growing up in a Bengali Hindu family, we worshipped Hindu gods and goddesses, but the magic of Christmas was hard to resist.
All thanks to the Anglo-Indian communities in our city who kept the festive spirit alive.
Every winter, as December 25th approached, the excitement was infectious.
Our family didn’t formally celebrate Christmas, but it became one of those festivals we casually joined in and soaking up the vibes.
The twinkling lights, the aroma of freshly baked cakes and the joy on people’s faces. Ah! It's impossible not to feel the holiday cheer.
The New Market Magic
Fifteen or sixteen years ago, one of the most magical places during Christmas was Kolkata’s New Market, also known as Hogg Market.
The entire area transformed into a wonderland with decorations, lights and a life-sized Santa Claus that made every child’s heart leap with joy.
