Sorry Writers — Forgive Me for Not Responding

With countless people losing their jobs, affording a Medium Membership is a dream.

We all know how brutal the pandemic has been on all of us. Some countries like India are still trying to recover. Countless people have lost their jobs and are wondering where the next meal will come from. Businesses have been shut for months, and people don’t feel motivated to do anything anymore.

Those who have jobs are scared that their days are numbered. If these lockdowns continue, they won’t be surprised to see an email in their inbox saying, ‘we are sorry, we have to let you go’.

The Constant Worry

I feel it, too, sometimes. What if the firm I work for asks me to go. What if they can’t afford to pay salaries anymore because the business is at an all-time low. People are searching for something known today as a ‘side hustle’. But considering the number of people looking for one, the wait can get tedious.

Some souls like me find solace in writing. Medium offers that liberty for free. But when you think of all the people that can make money here for their writing, I wish I were a part of it too. But until Medium Staff opens its Medium Partner Program for Indians, that dream seems far away.

I Must Wait Until Things Improve for Me

We all want to grow together and support one another. This only happens if we clap for the stories we love and we leave a comment that motivates a writer to keep writing. When you aren’t a member on Medium, you have the liberty to read a few member stories until you’re told, ‘to get unlimited access, please enrol for the Medium membership’. Five dollars may seem like peanuts to someone, but coming from a place where people don’t know where their next meal will come from, five dollars seem way too much. Don’t get me wrong; I would love to support more, read more, comment more and spread love as much as I can. But I need to save every penny at the moment until the economic conditions improve.

I know countless Indian writers are waiting in the hope that Medium will open the program to all countries. But until I get paid for my work by joining the Medium Partner Program in the RIGHT manner rather than using several other means, to afford the Medium membership will have to wait.

I Am Sorry — But Please Keep Writing

It hurts that I crave to support my fellow writers, but I need to focus on providing security for my family and me at this point. And like me, there might be many more writers who would love to join the membership program and are waiting for the Medium Partner Program to open its doors for all. But until then, we will find solace in sharing our thoughts here and finding peace, knowing that when things get tough, Medium will be a safe writing space to escape reality and pour our thoughts and feelings.

Sorry for not responding or reading the fabulous work of my fellow writers. Until things improve economically, please know that your work is healing and reading your experiences in whatever way we can help us to keep writing.

Until then, keep the words flowing.

To all the lovely KTHT writers, apologies in advance if I am unable to respond to your amazing writeups in response to the guest prompt “We are not our thoughts.” Please know that your words have the ability to heal and I am incredibly grateful that you made the time to think and then write about it. I love you guys and sending virtual hugs. Cheers!
