The Card Deck of Life

You never really lose in the game of ‘life’

I am bad with numbers and poker. I never had a good hand of cards and it never bothered me. Some may be unlucky in a game of cards while some play a much bigger game as they deal with the cards of life.

We all are given different situations to deal with. For me each situation is one card. Some cards we are happy with while the rest we wish we could let them go. But when we are dealing with the cards of life, the game is played differently.

Life is like a game of poker sometimes. The most humorous, bright, and happy faces are dealing with something gut-wrenching at home that we have no clue about. That person who is cribbing away for no rhyme or reason has nothing to crib about and yet they think life is nothing but a waste of time and resources. This set of people or this deck I would run away from or literally forfeit the game.

My Deck Better Than Yours?

As we exchange our cards or life situations with one another, here is what I have noticed. We think we have got the worst set of cards in our hand but when we interact and realise the plight of another’s pain, we feel that we are far better off.

But here is my analogy of things. The universe will deal us only with those sets of cards that we are capable of handling. We may feel like we got the worst set but it’s on us how we turn the game in our favour.

As we exchange our plight and then the universe somewhat changes two or three cards in our deck, we feel now the end will be easy. But you and I know that’s never the case as the trump card of ‘change’ always appears that wrecks our ‘planned’ game. With change we may be thrown into our past just to re-learn pending lessons. These lessons must be learnt before our deck is changed.

When the Universe Is the Dealer

Sometimes we feel we will never get out of this mess. It’s too painful and there is no respite. But somewhere after being patient enough, something changes. An event comes up, people re-enter your life or when you let go and leave it all to the universe an unexpected solution appears.

When the universe is the dealer and we hope that in the next game the odds will be in our favour, what we don’t realise is that things are always in our favour because the universe is always looking out for us in the most unexpected ways. We may feel that we have been dealt the worst numbers and there is no way in hell you can win your debt. But with time, patience, a lot of crying and awakening moments, we eventually do win the game.

We grow, we heal, we learn and unlearn. Along the way we meet people, share our decks and stories and when we finally think we have things in our control, a new twist appears. But remember, no matter which side of the poker table you are seated at, no matter what numbers are flashed in front of you and no matter how unknown and unpredictable a situation feels, don’t ever exchange, or leave the table.

Stick through it, fight, fall and stand up. Because in the end you may not win that pool of chips. But your prize money will consist of lessons, growth, and a unique sense of maturity. And that to me is priceless.
