What is Buddhism?

Buddhism is an Eastern philosophy that originated roughly 2,500 years ago in the Himalayan mountains in Nepal. With 500 million followers globally, it is one of the world’s largest belief systems. The main principles encourage ending suffering and eternal happiness. By practicing mindfulness meditation anyone can renounce worldly attachments for the cessation of suffering.

Buddhism is different from most religions because there isn’t a monotheistic or polytheistic God to worship, in that regard it is more of a philosophy on how to live your own life with happiness. Although considered a world religion there is no God and The Buddha (Siddhartha Gautama), was once a real person. Enlightenment is the main goal of Buddhism. It is the most difficult thing to do, to attain it one must renounce all attachments. Dharma, Karma, Reincarnation, and Nonattachment are other key concepts interchangeable with each other.
