Lessons learned from an iconic symbol

Talk about a steep learning curve! This one turned into a Mobius strip.

You’ve seen it before, though you may not have known what it was called. The Mobius strip looks like the number 8 lying on its side. It is the symbol of Eternity.

If you take a strip of construction paper — the sort they make Christmas chain garlands out of — but you twist it once before taping the two ends together, you will have created your very own Mobius strip.

If you then take a marker and start drawing a line along the length of the strip, it will continue drawing itself forever — over and over on top of itself, repeatedly until you stop. It could, in fact, continue eternally.

The most miraculous thing about it, is that because of that one little twist, the marker will draw its line on BOTH SIDES of the paper! Truly an eternal loop.

So, when I said that a learning curve was so steep that it turned into a Mobius strip, I was making a clever allusion to a Life experience so profound, that it goes on forever. An experience, for example, like becoming a parent.

The lessons continue for the rest of your life.

I have always loved symbolism — from my introduction to Yoga in 1971, to my Rosicrucian studies in 1977 and Neopaganism in 1991. I am fascinated by the way human beings convey concepts in images, truly proving that a picture can be worth a thousand words.

I have previousy published articles about the symbolism of the the Rose Cross and Balance Scales.
