The Storm Clouds of Social Media — Clearing the Source of My Hopelessness
Taking control of my pattern of thinking.
I had to get off social media. Yes, those apps provide unique perspectives that I likely won’t find anywhere else. And for that, I appreciate and value these platforms.
While I greatly enjoy the amount of light shed on many of our current societal issues, I noticed that it became difficult for me to maintain a positive outlook.
I didn’t notice immediately, but something insidious was happening. My ability to think positively was slowly weakening. To the point where any type of positive outlook I tried to muster seemed difficult and unrealistic.
Every time I tried to inspire hope for a romantic relationship, “Yes, but dating is a cesspool. You’re better off single.” Or when I tried to imagine a successful career, “Yeah, but the job market is ridiculously competitive. Good luck.”
I mean damn! Can I be hopeful about anything? According to social media, nope.
Don’t get me wrong, I greatly appreciate the much-needed observations that people provide, which help to expand my perspective of this world. However, I seriously need a balance.
