Walking Away From Arguments

Are all debates worth having?

“No rational argument will have a rational effect on a man who does not want to adopt a rational attitude”.

— Karl Popper

Sometimes, for the sake of peace, we just have to accept that not all conversations can be constructive.

We must always face fears of confrontation and be mindful of avoidant behaviour, but it’s equally crucial to recognise when a rational debate is pointless or unachievable. Futile.

“Never argue with an idiot. You’ll never convince the idiot that you’re correct, and bystanders won’t be able to tell who’s who,” said Twain.

Setting aside the unnecessary (“idiot”) label, these words are worth consideration.

How often do you find yourself goaded by another (or your own ego) to battle against clear dissonance?

The friction is relentless and real. And for what?

When it’s apparent that you and another are on the same frequency as an unpleasant debate looms, focus on what truly matters: protect your peace — in person and online.

Rise above it.

Smile; stay silent — regardless of their flapping.

Don’t allow another’s ignorance to drag you down to their level.

Send them love and (peacefully) fuck them off.

Maybe use the 15 minutes you just saved by not arguing to take some nice, long, deep belly breaths and thank yourself for the priceless gift of peace.
