What many of us say we want is success, but what I suspect most of us do is act to avoid failure. The two don’t lead to the same results.

Failure scares the crap out of most of us. Doing what’s safe—what’s less likely to fail—is usually much more of a priority than doing what’s perceived to be risky—for success. This isn’t to say that doing what’s risky is always what leads to success. It’s to point out that any deviation from the current norm is always perceived as a risk because it leads to the unknown.

The thing to understand about paths in life—that lead to personal “success”—is that there are as many paths as there are people. No two paths towards personal success are the same. Not even for identical twins, best friends, spouses, or life-long lovers. Every person’s path has deviations, or at least should have deviations, that lead them in different, unique, directions.
