Flipping through an old photo album, my grandma pointed to a grainy picture taken in front of Uluru. “One day when you’re older, you should go here too,” she said. This childhood memory stuck with me and led me to Uluru in the Northern Territory of Australia. I took a picture in the same spot and left my footprints on the same red-orange path that my grandma would have walked 50 years before me. Walking around Uluru felt like being in the presence of a wise elder, 550 million years of knowledge and forgiving benevolence emanating from its majestic body. Connecting to the sacred rock with my hands and feeling with my heart, I received the following wisdom.

The land is our lineage

The sacred sites of Uluru and Kata-Tjuta display markings left by the creation ancestors of the Aboriginal people. The Anangu people read these marks like a living history book, passing down indigenous laws, stories, and spirituality from generation to generation. In modern society, we forget that the land is our connection to our ancestors. Even if we’ll never know them, we walk on the same earth, admire the same flowers and trees, and celebrate the same harvests of the land. Caring for the land is not just for future generations. It’s an act of honoring the lives and wisdom that came before us and are a part of us today. The land is our past, present, and future — it is our lineage.

Live fearlessly — you have nothing to lose

Standing in the presence of a 550 million year old creation, I felt so… temporary. Uluru has witnessed and experienced the evolution of humanity and its consciousness, and it will continue to be here when we’re gone. It was humbling to be reminded of how fleeting the human life is. Every experience in this life is temporary, including fear and suffering. Uluru’s ancient wisdom told me not to take life so seriously. What a shame to spend our limited time here worrying, being afraid, and holding ourselves back. For the first time, I realized that the impermanence of life is liberating. In the end, we have nothing to lose. So why not live authentically and fearlessly?

Remember our sameness

Uluru is alive, radiating energy that has been felt and honored throughout time. An Aboriginal park ranger shared that Uluru is known as a portal and energy vortex. The energy is so palpable that when I placed my palms on the rock, I felt it rush into my hands and surge through my body. It felt like a natural connection, a higher frequency of a familiar energy. When nature moves us, it’s the heart and soul recognizing our sameness. We are reminded that the same divine wisdom that flows through nature also flows through us. When we connect with nature, we remember that we are not greater than or separate from any of Mother Earth’s creations.

This is why Uluru — a rock — can teach us about life, inspire us to live wholeheartedly, and remind us of our inner wisdom. Nature is our teacher and our mirror, showing us who we truly are.
