You hurting me is not something I have control over, but it’s always my choice whether I decide to strike back or not.

Life is a roller coaster of uncomfortable situations that you mostly ride on with difficult people. The opportunity to be mean and not take anyone else’s feelings into consideration always arises. It’s easier and gets the message across, right? At the end of the day, people must understand that you’re not a rug to be walked all over. You must stand up for yourself and set boundaries that others should never cross unless they want you to get the stinger out.

This type of mentality helps us survive the cruel world. It keeps us safe and guarded so we can fit into the “winner” category. I’m aware that in current society, we’re either deemed winners or losers. We are taught we can’t be both and we definitely don’t want to have anything to do with the second category. A loser remains a loser because he shows he cares and therefore he’s weak. A winner remains a winner because he strikes back when hurt to prove his power.

If that isn’t the perfect description of today’s social dynamics, I don’t know what it is. Thankfully, there are people out there doing their best to change this situation: from researchers like Brene Brown to online spiritual guides such as Jay…
