Sometimes I wonder what might have come from the coffee together. I told you from the start that I was in a relationship, yet you wouldn’t believe me.

Why?

Beneath the civilized veneer of coffee, the attraction was present even though we tried to hide it with small talk — about the weather, life, and plenty of pithy bon mots.

You got me thinking….Uh, oh.

Maybe it’s because you gave me your full attention. I was your only priority in that space of time. What a wonderful feeling to be the priority, rather than one buried at the bottom of a to-do list— or worse, an option.

Did you wonder what this simple act of coffee between friends might have been like in a different universe? Even if it was only for an hour, we were in our own bubble, oblivious to everything around us —except each other and the rich, warm scent of coffee.

When we said our goodbyes, I pretended not to see the flash of regret in your eyes as I casually walked away — though inside I felt the sadness of returning to a life of mundanity, routine, responsibilities, and broken promises.
