Of the many .50BMG rifles available in the market, Barrett rifles are the most well known. If you are a follower of this brand, you will know of the repeated attempts made to ban these rifles. But Barrett is impossible to put down! In spite of several attempts Barrett has bounced back with more vigor. Whether it is the MRAD models or the Barrett M82, these rifles are known to be heavy rugged devices that have made a devoted band of followers for themselves. As far as these rifles are concerned, the company was established by Ronnie Barrett to build semi-automatic rifles for .50BMG ammunition. These were initially used in Browning M2HB heavy machine guns.

Barrett rifles were available from 1982 and hence they were named Barrett M82. Since 1982 these rifles have received positive reviews and even today, these are quite popular amongst the users. In the U.S. military these are known as Special Applications Scoped Rifle. Let's find out why these Barrett firearms are so popular? These can be used from standoff range or even when the target is behind covers to defeat enemy snipers or criminals. The latest models from this family are M82A1M rifles. These have a full length Picatinny rail so that you can a large variety of scopes along with your firearm. Military and police from about 30 countries use these Barrett rifles, such as, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece,Italy, Mexico, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, UK, USA and others.

Besides the military uses, civilians also use these rifles for.50 caliber long range shooting competitions. It is the features like precision, recoil operated, semi-automatic technique that make the M82 so popular amongst the users. When you fire with the gun, the barrel first stops, recoils for a small distance. Then the bolt unlocks as the accelerator strikes back and transfers some energy from the barrel to the bolt. This helps in the reliable cycling. The barrel, then stops, as the bolt continues and finally ejects a spent case.

There is a reactive muzzle brake that helps the heat to dissipate from the heavy barrel. Thus the gun can easily hold up to 10 rounds. Moreover the M82 rifles have 2 chamber brakes of rectangular cross-section. As far as accessories are concerned there is folded carrying handle and a bi-pod. M82A1, M82A2 and M82A3 are the 3 varied models that are part of the Barrett M82 rifle family.
