We’ve been talking about the knowledge economy for nearly 60 years now, since management guru Peter Drucker first predicted the ascent of knowledge work in his seminal 1959 book, Landmarks of Tomorrow.

Few would dispute today that knowledge work has overtaken more traditional economic activities — notwithstanding the transformation technology has brought to them — yet priorities for public investment seem rooted in a bygone era.
