Boston boasts several world-class universities, which could deliver GE a ready supply of the employees to assist in its transition from an industrial-era firm to one that can compete in a knowledge economy, Mr. Phillips [global chief executive of the Urban Land Institute, a land-use think tank] said.

“Boston has been overshadowed by Silicon Valley for the last several years” as an incubator of high-tech innovation, he said. But it is still “a really key asset in the knowledge economy.”
