The leaders of many of these countries understand very well that economic growth, military power and national security rely heavily on technological advances. They call for concerted efforts in scientific research and rapid scientific development to catch up with knowledge-based societies. Indeed, government funding for science and education has grown sharply in recent years in many Muslim countries. So what do I mean when I say they are still disengaged from science?
