The roster of knowledge-economy companies landing here in recent years include GE in New Orleans, CGI in Lafayette, IBM and EA Sports in Baton Rouge — all of them important to governors and mayors as bellwethers for other companies growing in Louisiana.

But whatever promise the new sector holds, it is illusory if Louisiana — particularly in terms of state government — does not pay for generating the talent these new companies need. That’s as true at the University of New Orleans or the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, as it is in Baton Rouge for LSU and Southern main campuses.
