App of the Month: Pigment
It’s a coloring book.
No, really. Pigment is a digital coloring book and it’s free. It’s been a while since my last app post, and I’ve been stressed so I wanted to find an app to help me chill out.
So, here’s why I like it:
Ease of use
With a coloring app, I want it to be as easy to use as a physical book. It’s the same argument I have with Kindles/iBooks versus real books. I like holding something that’s tactile and easy to manipulate. I don’t want to be frustrated with something that’s suppose to be relaxing. I never ran into this problem with the app.
Everything in Pigment is intuitive, so much so that I skipped the tutorial showing how to use the tools. That’s great! Because I don’t need a tutorial to figure out how a book works, right? It should be that easy.
I especially like the fill tool so, if I don’t want to spend 30 minutes scrubbing my iPhone screen to color a butterfly wing, I have options. Zooming in and out is effortlessly recognizable from a coloring stroke.
I’ve ran into other apps where I would end up with a random stroke where I didn’t want one while I was focused on getting to a smaller section in the picture; Pigment did not have that problem.
Variety in templates
There are a lot of templates to choose from and even more if you want to spend money to purchase the non-free ones. The app also offers a free download of a template each day which is pretty cool. Though, you can’t access the templates, even the free ones, without using wifi or data. I hadn’t realized this until I was subjected to the DMV wait lines and couldn’t get it to open…(I use up my monthly data pretty quickly, okay?).
It does what it’s suppose to and it’s not hard to use. That’s all I can really ask for in a coloring app. I do, however; recommend using this on an iPad just because of the bigger screen, though, it’s not imperative. Pigment is totally enjoyable and user friendly on a smartphone.
