Kinky Friedman

You don’t interview Kinky Friedman. You make the call and let him go, and what a ride it will be. From one-liners to tales of his years in the public eye, it’s never a dull moment with the Texan, but there is no reason for reflecting on past glories these days, as his new album, Resurrection, finds him in prime form as he heads into New York City for a gig tonight at The Cutting Room.

But why the title Resurrection for someone who has been active and out there in the music world for decades?

“It could be seen as a Christian concept, but it can also be seen in other ways,” said Friedman. “I laid off for practically 40 years as far as writing any songs and I came back with a vengeance.”

That return, 2018’s Circus of Life, was a potent comeback to be sure, but Resurrection is even better, and Friedman is satisfied with the end result.

“Resurrection also means, I think, coming back,” he said. “Picking yourself up out of the dust and coming back again. We counted the guy out, we thought he was done, and here he is.”

At 75.

“I’m 75, but I read at the 77-year-old level,” he chuckles. “I can no longer say that I’m too young for medicare, too old for women to care.”
