If you notice Johnny Iguana and Michael Caskey with their eyes closed when their band, The Claudettes, play “Time Won’t Take Our Times Away,” it’s understandable, given the meaning behind the song.

“Whenever we call it out on stage, I look over at Michael because sometimes it feels a little bit sadistic to make him play that song when he knows why I wrote it and think back to the moment, but I think it’s a little bit of enforced therapy from me,” said Iguana, pianist for the Chicago-based quartet.

In 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic turned the world upside down, Iguana and Caskey were playing in Kalamazoo, Michigan, which happened to be where Caskey’s mother, Kay, lived. After the gig, the two, friends for close to a quarter of a century, stayed at Kay’s home.

“He didn’t get to see her that often,” Iguana recalled, “And after the show we stayed up in her living room and just talked and laughed and he was calling her mommy. (Laughs) It was so sweet and so great, and we went to bed and then when we woke up, we knew…
