Why Japan?

1. Open policy

In April 2017, Japanese government revised the “Fund Settlement Act” to recognize Bitcoin as a legal payment method and set a series of standards and rules for exchanges. In September of the same year, Japan’s Financial Services Agency (FSA) released the first list of licensed “virtual currency exchanges” in Japan. The first batch of licensed virtual currency exchanges in Japan was made of eleven exchanges, including: Bitflyer, Zaif, BTCBOX, GMO, QUOINEX, BitBank, Bitpoint, etc. Right now, bitcoin transactions denominated in Japanese yen account for nearly half of the total transaction volume, ranking first in the world. Under the support of the Abe government, this year may be the year of the Japanese digital currency trading, and the most successful year for blockchain technology.

2. Japan’s blockchain projects are flourishing

Examples include The FinTech Demonstration Experimental Center, the Japanese Foreign Exchange Unitary Alliance, the retail payment global platform construction and globalization legislation. Another example is that Rakuten acquired the exchange, and the upcoming Rakuten Pay supports all payment methods embedded in the same platform. Mitsubishi UFJ, Japan’s largest financial company, announced the development of Mufgcoin. Mizuho Financial Group, one of Japan’s three major banks, joined forces with Japan Post Bank on a blockchain project called “J-Coin”, which will be launched in March of this year.

3. Japan’s blockchain scene is trending

Earlier this year, Japan-based company Marubeni confirmed in a press release that they had partnered with a New York-based blockchain startup to use blockchain technology for its energy business. In e-finance, the Tokyo-based blockchain company Crypto Garage announced today that it has obtained regulatory approval to begin trial operation of its solution system using Blockstream’s Liquid Sidechain.
