Jesus asked a lot of questions. He wants us to do the same.

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. (Matthew 7:7, NIV)

But for Christian men, it’s easier to be superficial than real. When asked a highly personal question, especially in a group setting, you feel pressured to give the expected response instead of what you’re thinking.

To get candid, engaging answers, you need questions that knock on the door of a man’s heart. This article offers 31 questions to help Christian men get real.

The power of these questions is they are real. They arose from the stories of more than 100 guys I interviewed on a Zoom-based weekly men’s gathering sponsored by my church. We call it, you guessed it, “Get Real.”

To learn more about “Get Real” and how it started, read the article below.

Jesus knew how to interview. Bible scholars count more than 300 questions by Jesus recorded in the Bible. He undoubtedly asked many more.

Jesus seems genuinely curious, less the Answer Man and more the Question Man. His questions get to the heart like a sharp arrow shredding the center of a bullseye.

A few examples:

But who do you say I am?

(Matt 16:15, NIV)

Do you want to get well?

(John 5:6, NIV)

Why are you so afraid?

(Matthew 8:26, NIV)

Simon son of John, do you love me?

(John 21:16, NIV)

In “Get Real,” I interview a man for 20 minutes about how Jesus revealed himself in his life. A theme emerges from that story. Inspired by that theme, I ask an open-ended question.

Zoom then breaks us up into small groups for 20 minutes. The conversations have been extraordinary.

You don’t need to follow our format to use these questions. Try them over a meal with a friend, in your Bible study, in your personal “quiet time,” or in another appropriate venue.
