Many times I have heard well-meaning Christians quote this verse in an attempt to bring comfort and assurance.

We cannot fathom what God is doing in our lives. Everything seems like it is spiraling out of our control, but don’t worry — God’s thoughts are higher than our thoughts…

It’s okay — inevitable even — that we wouldn’t understand what God is up to. After all, “my thoughts are not your thoughts”…

So, accept what’s happening, God’s got your back…

I don’t know if quoting Isaiah 55 really helps the woman who has just been told that she will never bear a child. Or the guy who got cut from his job and is wondering how he will pay next month’s bills.

So what should we make of this familiar verse?

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. (Isaiah 55:8, NIV)

Are we using this verse in its proper context? How should we understand this verse from around 2600 years ago today?
