Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”

(Joshua 1:9, ESV)

Joshua 1:9 should be its own Jeopardy! clue, under the category “Overused yet Misunderstood Bible Verses”. Along with Jeremiah 29:11 and Philippians 4:13, it has to be the most requested tattoo or used as one’s Instagram life verse. I am, admittedly a Christian curmudgeon (since the age of 12 really), and so I have a special rancor for treating God’s words so irreverently. I want to sarcastically ask a question to Sophia9293 or whomever this applies, do you think God’s plan for you to prosper is to reach 10,000 followers? I didn’t know you were a part of the exilic community.

Ok, prickly preface over.

But I do think the problem isn’t an exegetically one, though we can always be better readers of Scripture. I think deep down inside, we all yearn for inspiration and encouragement. We are all frail beings and it makes sense that we need a spiritual pick me up. The problem, then, is when you pair that sense of depravity with a self-centered, even materialistic desire.
