This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: …, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister.

(1 John 3:10, NIV)

The brothers sat on the porch, looking across the well-cut lawn. Their easy comradery in the summer evening belied the vast difference in their situations. One has a lifelong social and mental disability. The other is a successful corporate technocrat who is immersed in the community.

This example of brotherhood spoke eloquently to me. I resolved to take care of the siblings God gave me. With his help, I will strive today to ignore differences and concentrate on nurturing kinship. Today, I’ll ignore any tension and toxicity and find opportunities to love as a child of my Heavenly Father.
