Palm trees are not just an emblem of triumph but a banner of hope after surviving a storm

Every year around this time churches across the world try to emulate that classic scene in the bible where Jesus rode on a donkey while people over laid palm leaves on the ground and yet other onlookers fanned him with their palm leaves. You know that classic scene mentioned in the book of John…

On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion: behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt. (John 12:12–15 KJV)

I myself remember the day that I went to the Easter Parade of 1992 in New York City and the emotions evoked by the crowd during the palm leaves scene depiction. There were thousands of people at the Easter parade that day and it took everything my mother had in her to not lose grip of her children’s hands as she pressed into the crowds. I was dressed in my Sunday best; a white dress adorned in pastel stripes and a silk white ribbon laced around my velvety black hair.
