Did you explode some fireworks or watch at a safer distance? Eat a hot dog or grill some ribs? Picnic with friends or boat on a lake? Watch a parade or rant about politics?

In America, you can do any of these things, all these things, or ignore the whole day. Churches proudly fly the flag, pledge allegiance to it (as well as the Christian flag and the Bible), and celebrate the military on American holidays.

But have we supplanted allegiance to Christ with our patriotism for America?

Controversy stirs over whether America is a Christian nation or if America was founded by Christians (though many were Deists). Much of America was settled by people seeking religious freedom. A quote attributed to Roger Babson stated, “South America was founded by men who were seeking gold. North America was founded by men who were seeking God” (brandonweb.com). What do we seek today?

Some people who claim to be Christians seek political power with no aspersions of morals, values, or godliness. They claim America as their motto and patriotism as their chief emotion. They swear in public while addressing the supposed religious…
