“True silence is the rest of the mind and is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment.”

— William Penn

God has been speaking to me about rest for a long time. I’ve made great progress in learning about rest and some progress in learning to rest.

Physical rest I can do. Mental rest… well, I struggle there.

My journey in learning about rest began several years ago when I was asking the Lord about a word for the new year. He gave me rest. I studied and wrote about what I learned in my blog that year.

The first thing I learned was that when God calls us to rest or be still He doesn’t always mean to do nothing.

Resting

I can rest on His promises like a lighthouse rests on its foundation, secure against the storm. The lighthouse is still doing its job, shining its light, while it rests.

I am learning to rest my mind on His word. By meditating and frequently thinking about what God has said I can rest in His truth rather than trying to think my way through it.

He has been telling me “Come to Me. The table is ready.”

He is at the table, waiting for me. Everything I need for life and godliness is on the table, too. It’s ready. I so enjoy it when I obey. I sit at the table with Him and rest.

He knows all my needs and is working everything for my good so I don’t have to. Like the lighthouse, I can do the things He has given me to do while resting on His promise to care for me and work everything for my good. It all about Him and His glory, not me and my performance.

What have you learned about rest?

This is my 26th post in a writing challenge by Janis Cox. She has given 28 prompts. I have committed (being accountable to myself here!) to write for 15 minutes a day on one of her prompts (this one was the quote). I then have 15 minutes to polish and post so there’s not much polishing. As I said in my first post of this challenge it’s getting me back to writing instead of producing. Still, I hope my thoughts are a blessing and you’ll keep reading.
