And so beside the silent sea
I wait the muffled oar:
No harm from Him can come to me
On ocean or on shore.

— John Greenleaf Whittier, “I Bow My Forehead to the Dust”

The man’s shoulders stooped as the dawning sun glinted across the water. Where is his transport to the other side?

If you’re into Tolkien, you’re familiar with the end of Return of the King. A boat sails off carrying Frodo, Gandalf, and others on a journey. We believers, knowing of Tolkien’s Christian faith, understand the boat represents that final most welcome shift from life to death — to Heaven.

“I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25–26, NIV)
