Especially When Times are Uncertain, Be a Light
An open letter to my Christian brothers and sisters
My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The past few weeks have been a runaway train of unpredictability. School closures, travel restrictions, rising tensions, and anxiety about the coronavirus have converged. It’s affecting everyone. The frighteningly quick spread of the virus has stirred up fear and set people on edge.
Our response to others about this situation is critical. People living in fear crave hope. We have hope to offer. Right now, our Christian witness weighs more heavily in light of eternity. We see newfound openness and sensitivity unlike when everything’s humming along wonderfully. It’s simply a matter of speaking up and sharing the hope we have.
I think of the words of Jesus, which seem so fitting today:
“Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.” (John 4:35, NIV)
In recent days, I’ve seen a lot of negativity on social media. Sadly, some of it comes from fellow believers. In moments of frustration, we may be tempted to sound off about our earthly problems. We may even retweet, share, or comment without considering the eternal…
