How This Writer Contrasts Culture and Faith
Writer Spotlight: An Interview with Thomas McDaniels
As a publication on Medium, we have grown to over 100 writers in a half year. We are excited to see what God is doing to get His Word out there.
Through this interview series, we want to share with you a little snapshot into the lives of our writers.
When did you join Medium? What influenced your decision to join?
June 2019 — Have wanted to write my whole life and decided it was time. I actually found Medium on the Internet. Thought it was fabulous. Joined.
When did you join Koinonia? What attracted you to this publication?
I love writing in the Christianity market and was looking for a place to write my Christian content.
How long have you been writing and how did you come to it?
I have been writing as an amateur and one post a month blogger for 10 years.
Who are some of the people who most influenced your decision to write?
I have always known I would write and have been an avid reader my whole life. Love biographies, the scriptures and primarily topical scripture expose.
Where do you get your ideas? What inspires you?
I get ideas primarily through reading. And the Holy Spirit leads me. Currently, I have been writing in challenges with Jeff Goins. I would love to see Koinonia do a 30-day writing challenge on topics or scripture.
What do you like most / least about writing?
The time demand. The aloneness and the price it cost to produce good work. Not for chumps!
How do you balance professional time with personal time?
Discipline and demand. Balance is good work. Maybe balancing act. It’s a challenge for sure. I primarily go off my wife’s needs and our home schedule. If we are good and connected, then I know I can write. If we are not getting good time together, I know I can wait.
What Medium publications/writers are you currently following?
What are some of your favorite things? What makes you unique?
Reading is my favorite thing. Writing, Teaching, and exercise. I love people. I actually love writing about how culture crosses Christianity. I enjoy doing research on topics that clash with the Christian way of life. And writing to tie those things together. From that, I love to give lessons to believers on how to live beyond our society and the way the world lives. I’m just developing a website around that profile.
How is your faith reflected in your writing?
I am a passionate writer that likes contrasting culture and faith. My writing is more filled with persuasion rather than being right.
What are some things you learned from your own writing? From others?
That I continually can improve. That writing is a craft and not a gift. I have learned that brevity rules. I actually do not know how to write. I am learning from every article on Medium concerning writing and am an avid learner, even though I’ve had some measure of success outside of Medium.
What is your ultimate writing goal?
To continually improve my skills and be the best I can to add value to others. These literally came off my phone notes. Writing Goals
My top goals:
1. Glorify God
2. Learn better skills
3. Become a top writer in Medium
4. Write one viral post
5. Make 6 figures as a writer
What advice do you have for a newbie on Medium?
Learn, learn, and keep learning. It’s a big family! Be patient. Research well. Check your credentials. Edit, edit, edit. Sleep on every post. Learn the software with excellence. And strongly meditate on headlines.
Where else can we find you on the Internet? Do you have a website, blog, Pinterest board etc?
