How to Write a Devotional for the Upper Room Magazine

In this article, you will learn what the Upper Room is, what type of devotionals the editors are looking for, and how to submit your work.

You will also get a glimpse into my approach to writing a devotional. The Upper Room has published four of my submissions during the past two years.

What is the Upper Room?

The Upper Room is a daily devotional booklet written by ordinary people like you and me. The booklet is published monthly and is available in 35 languages and 100 countries. You can read the current day’s devotional here.

How do I begin?

Begin by reading the Upper Room and then studying their detailed submission guidelines. Below are a few tips to keep in mind as you write.

Make only one point in your devotional.

Be authentic. This is your experience. Tell the reader what you heard, saw, felt, and said, and summarize what you learned from it. Gently suggest how they can apply the message to their own life.

Select an appropriate Bible reading as well as a single scripture verse. Write a short…
