God and Hip Hop
Christian Hip Hop has been a part of my life for nearly two decades. Prior to having a relationship with Christ, I had been a fan of Rap and R&B my entire childhood. Like most kids, I was exposed to these genres of music through a parent (my mom).
She had CDs (I’m showing my age here) and cassette tapes, and it was common to have the radio playing in the apartments we lived in. Everyone from Jay Z, 50 Cent, the LOX, Eminem, Mase, and artists signed to Bad Boy Entertainment filled our entertainment center in the living room.
After I was saved, I felt the need to pull away from these artists. I noticed that their content conflicted with my new values and desire for God. Somewhere between 2004 and 2005, I was introduced to Christian Hip Hop via my track coach, and my horizons expanded. The first album in this genre I purchased was Ambassador’s “The Thesis”. For the first time, I started being introduced to artists that met my need spiritually and musically/lyrically.
Years went by and I eventually came across a song called “Grace” by Everyday Process. This has become my favorite Christian Hip Hop song of all time. It covers the topic of imagining how our lives could have turned out if not for the grace of God. The chorus (hook)…
