I’m currently reading through the book of Joshua. I can’t tell you the voice I hear when I read the Bible. Yet whenever I read the scripture, Joshua 1:9, I hear my friend Billie Jean’s voice. I see her proclaiming this word, each phrase punctuated with an exclamation mark, hearts and smiley faces.

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9, NIV)

You know how TV commercials bombard you with a message until it’s humanly impossible to forget it? Well, she’s not like that at all. With Billie Jean, you knew she was giving all, sharing her best. She trumpeted God’s word while living it, accomplishing much more than a walking billboard.

I refuse to be sad when I think of Billie Jean. Letting sorrow come near thoughts of her would be like sobbing while eating ice cream or stifling a child’s uncontaminated giggle. Besides, although she’s been gone two years now, I’m certain she’s praising her heart out, flashing the signature smile we all loved.

I do miss her. If you knew her, you would too. The loss is like watching your favorite movie with all the good stuff…
