It Matters Where You Look

When seeking the Kingdom of God

“Seek the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.” (Matthew 6:33, NLT)

I think this verse can be very frustrating at times. Jesus is telling us to ‘seek’ God’s kingdom, and that’s exactly what we do. We go searching.

We go to different churches, revivals, ministry groups, and communities trying to find God. We think life will be okay when we finally find Him. And when life is not okay we fear that we have lost God or worse — that He has left us.

As I read the sermon on the mount in its entirety, I believe that perhaps Jesus wasn’t telling us to be looking for something, but rather that we should be seeking to create something. Bear with me as I share my thought process.

Embody God’s Kingdom on Earth

We should be seeking — striving — to live according to God’s law. In that way, we create an atmosphere where God’s love becomes visible to others who might also be seeking Him. Sometimes it’s difficult to find God in a church or a building or a religion. We find other people in those places.

His word tells us that where two or three are gathered in His name, He is there with them (Matthew 18:20). I believe this. Sometimes it’s…
