Just a Minute Devotional #32
Being nudged to do a task
I offered my back to those who beat me, my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard; I did not hide my face from mocking and spitting. (Isaiah 50:6, NIV)
I was shocked at the accumulated stuff I had collected over the years. I had the task of downsizing my belongings. Revisiting the past mementos and tossing them out took a lot of work and was emotional.
I have many tasks I prefer to avoid: mundane jobs, paying taxes, going to the dentist, etc. We all have jobs that we may not relish, but we know that ignoring them causes more work in the long run.
Jesus did not necessarily look with great happiness towards His task of torture and pain He would face. He knew that the sacrifice for our sins would be at the expense of His life.
In (Luke 22:42, NIV) Jesus prayed:
Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.
The book of Matthew says that He prayed this more than once. But Jesus obeyed out of His great love for the Father and us.
Is the Holy Spirit giving you a nudge to complete a task?
He will never task us with something that He will not first equip us to accomplish. Many times, He just nudges us to forgive, love, pray, listen, do, and go.
Do we grumble and complain?
Jonah ran from his task and found himself in a fish’s belly. It would have been better to dive into the water of faith, trust God, and obey His call.
I think we, too, can learn a lesson.
Like the Nike commercial says, “Just do it!”
