Just a Minute Devotional #51
Turning a blind eye
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32, CEB)
I knew a man who turned a blind eye to his drug addiction. This problem led to a myriad of other issues that deeply hurt him and his family.
“Turning a blind eye” means to ignore something or pretend not to notice it. We have all done it at times, but neglecting to realize something does not negate the facts.
We don’t like to admit our faults or downfalls. We want to pass the blame elsewhere. We primarily “hide our heads in the sand,” another idiom.
It is indeed challenging to open our eyes and face the truth because the truth sometimes hurts. The truth is threefold:
- We all sin.
- We can become addicted to our sins.
- We are not able to help ourselves.
However, there is also a threefold truth concerning God.
- God is perfect, without sin, and blameless.
- He sent His Son to break the chain of sin and addiction.
- When we confess and accept Jesus, we have a warrior who will help us.
We all need a champion who will fight our battles on our behalf. God loves us as no other and wants our redemption.
Let us not “hide our heads in the sand” or “turn a blind eye” to the facts. Instead, let us come to Jesus, who is the way, the truth, and the life, and we will be free.
Prayer:
Father, I accept your Son as my Savior to help me break this addiction. I confess my sin and ask for forgiveness. Please help me to get out of this cesspool of evil.
