And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten, the cankerworm, and the caterpillar, and the palmerworm, my great army which I sent among you. And ye shall eat in plenty, and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord your God, that hath dealt wondrously with you: and my people shall never be ashamed. (Joel 2:25–26, KJV)

They come in skinny, way too skinny. They have straggly hair, crumbly teeth, and lots of blemishes. Some cannot form sentences or express complete thoughts. They stare and act completely messed up, socially. They’ve been among the locusts.

They become alarmed when there is no threat and laconic when others are excited. They check out, entering another world when important subjects are being discussed and adopt a hardness for no-one-knows-why. More symptoms of locusts.

They have been deprived of the next hit and shake, seize, stutter, are unable to remain seated, sing off key — even if it is not singing-time. They are the hopelessly addicted. Yeah, locusts.

And I come to bring them hope.
