My Grandma Walls’ Quilts
An attitude of gratitude
This is the day that the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
(Psalm 118:24 NKJV)
An attitude of gratitude is a characteristic worth striving for in life. It didn’t come naturally to me, especially as a child.
My thankless heart
“Not another quilt,” I moaned. I held it up looking at the colorful blocks of little Dutch boys and girls. “Why can’t Grandma understand eleven-year-olds don’t think quilts are cool?”
And yet, every year, that’s what my grandmother gave us for Christmas. I had hinted for a bike, but I wasn’t surprised when the annual package made its way from Illinois to southern California.
A lot of time and effort went into each one of those well-crafted quilts and pillowcases. They had monetary worth too, since each quilt sold for about fifty dollars. That was a good chunk of change sixty years ago. I took those quilts stitched in love for granted, even to the point of resenting them.
I childishly refused to recognize the value of what she made for me.
