Oh, Canada! How Do I Love Thee?

Let me count the ways

My parents emigrated from the Netherlands to Canada in the early 1960s. As a teenager, I remember complaining about the weather and wishing that my parents had chosen a warmer climate like Florida.

However, as an adult, I am extremely happy that they chose Canada. There is so much to love about Canada. Here are just a few things that I appreciate (in no particular order):

Tim Hortons

My first job was working at “Timmies”. No other coffee joint has been able to top the fresh coffee and donuts that are a staple in many people’s morning routine.

Health care

My father suffered a heart attack and had to have a quadruple bypass. My brother broke his arm numerous times. I myself was involved in a car accident as a teenager that required 6 operations on my hand. Yet our great healthcare system handled each emergency and we were not forced to go into debt.

Weather

Although I had complained in the past, I really have come to love the change of the seasons. I find the cold of the winter gives me more of an appreciation for the heat of the summer. The change in the trees alone offers a feast for the senses. I love to snowmobile and snowshoe in the winter, hike in the spring and fall, and bicycle and swim in the summer.

Water

We have it in abundance. And it’s clean! I drink it, shower in it, swim and boat in it. We don’t have to walk miles to a dried-up well to fill a bucket. We have refreshing water that only requires a turn of the tap.

Religious freedom

I often say a prayer of thanks that I can attend church on Sunday without worry of persecution. On my bookshelf, I have 7 different Bibles. I can read them, share them, talk about them. I can attend Bible studies and express my love of Christ.

I have traveled a bit within Canada and been awestruck by the mountains in the west and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. There is still so much traveling that I would like to do. Canada is so large that it takes days just to drive through my province of Ontario!

Canada is home to some pretty amazing creatures including moose, beavers and the beluga whale.

And we can’t forget real maple syrup.

I truly do love Canada and am proud to be a Canadian. I feel very blessed that my parents chose this beautiful land to settle in.

O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all of us command.

With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!

From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

Today, July 1st, Canada celebrates its 152nd birthday!

Happy Canada Day!
