“The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.” (Matthew 13:31–32 , NIV)

What is the mustard seed parable?

Jesus tells us a simple yet lively story, the parable of the mustard seed, to illustrate a spiritual lesson. Like all the Biblical parables, it uses the power of symbolism to illustrate a point and evoke faith.

This simple parable grows up out of Palestine soil in Jesus’ time to show us the spiritual principles behind life in the Kingdom of God.

What is the meaning of the parable of the mustard seed?

In our story here, a man plants a small mustard seed that grows and grows into “the largest of garden plants.”

Despite its slight size and meekness, in time the mustard seed becomes a great tree where many birds find protection perching in its branches.

Jesus lets us know the Kingdom of God is different from the earthly kingdoms we understand. This kingdom is a spiritual kingdom that starts small at first.
