The Christian Dilemma with Secular Music

What does the Bible say about listening to secular music?

I’m sure most of you are music lovers, right?

Same here! Music is part of my life, whether getting ready in the morning, heading to work, or just going about my day. I can’t imagine a day without it.

In the past, I wasn’t really into Christian or Gospel tunes to brighten my mood. Instead, I was all about the high-energy beats from rock bands and K-Pop. Take a peek at my playlist; it’s a whole mix of songs about parties, self-love, depression, and everything in between.

Unfortunately, here’s a reality check: not every song out there is good for us.

It dawned on me during the 2023 Grammys. With just one glance, it became apparent to me that something was off about the event (at least in my view). The black and red theme and an exceptionally dark stage made me wonder: is this a music celebration or some kind of ritual?

Out of nowhere, an unsettling feeling just grabbed hold of my chest, making me uneasy.

So, I decided to part ways with all the music I used to be super attached to. Yep, I said my goodbyes to my entire music collection and even wiped out my Spotify playlist. It’s crazy, but that was a huge moment for me, shifting from my usual tunes to Christian music.

If you feel led by the Lord to disattach from secular music and cling to songs of His Praise, join me on this transformative journey! Trust me, if I can break free, so can you.

Try fasting from secular music

Being a 24/7 music lover, ditching secular tunes can be challenging. But hey, I’ve got a little secret to share for making it a success — try fasting! Take on the challenge of fasting from secular music for three days, then a week, and even up to a month.

Sure, there might be times when you slip back into your old playlist habits, but don’t lose heart! Just keep those prayers coming and ask God for the strength to resist the temptation.

You know what’s cool?

Right after I committed, my Instagram feed flooded with recommendations for Christian artists who create beautiful, God-glorifying music. So, thank God for still blessing my days with awesome tunes!

A lesson to guard your heart

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23, NIV)

Secular music is the music of the world. It talks more about a love story, heartbreak, violence, and more bad things rather than talking about God.

When we read Daniel 3, we learn that music was used sometimes for idolatry purposes. King Nebuchadnezzar created a golden statue, and the nation was commanded to bow down and worship whenever they heard the sounds of various musical instruments.

Just as music was used for idol worship in ancient times, the same holds true today. Idols manifest when we prioritize something over God. I, too, once considered idols more important than spending time with God, focusing on their music and shows instead of engaging with His Word.

Learn from the example of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego — three Hebrew boys who stood firm against idol worship despite the impending severe consequences of King Nebuchadnezzar.

So, choose music that fills your ears — and your heart — with melodies that spark joy, peace, and faith in God!
