I did not lose myself all at once. I rubbed out my face over the years, washing away my pain, the same way carvings on stone are worn down by water. — Amy Tan

Have you ever felt invisible? It’s soul-crushing to think you are not seen or valued. The enemy tries to steal our identity by convincing us that we are invisible.

The cost of invisibility

According to Psych Central, the persistent feeling of being overlooked or unseen can erode our self-confidence and self-esteem — in other words, our very identity.

Common reasons for feeling invisible include racial or gender stereotypes, childhood trauma or neglect, shyness, or a disability. Chronic feelings from being overlooked or rejected can eventually lead to anger, envy, shame, or isolation from others.

I used to feel invisible as a young child. My siblings were much older than me, and while I was learning to read, write, and express myself, they were in the throes of learning to navigate life. My parents were consumed with teenage angst, depression, unplanned pregnancies, the drama that rivaled soap operas, and a lot of dysfunction.
